Zelda Foundation is dedicated to rescuing seniors, injured, and special needs animals. It is named in memory of Zelda, Katrina survivor and the original pet rescued by Dirty Dog Squad
Zelda was miraculously found in a devestated zone of New Orleans, having had no food or water for nearly 6 weeks. She was severely emaciated and dehydrated, and profoundly ill with heartworm. No one can understand how she survived those conditions but she fought valiantly and recovered. After 6 1/2 wonderful years of being the most gentle, soulful and amazing friend, she lost her life to an aggressive form of cancer. Her death left a huge void in our rescue group. We are proud that her legacy will carry on on the memory of all the future pets saved through this special project named in her honor.

Senior pets are often dumped at the shelter by their owners when they get "too old" . They are especially stressed in the shelter environment. These seasoned veterans are rarely adopted, often ignored by the general public, and the first to be put down by the shelters. These older pets have amazing souls and charm, and have been some of the most enchanting and appreciative pets we have ever saved. |
Other special needs pets include those abandoned at the shelter due to injuries or illnesses. There is little hope for these animlas in the shelter, as limited public resources rarely allow for any treatment. Most people are unwilling, or unable, to adopt these pets with immediate veterinary needs. These individuals also face certain euthanasia. When Zelda Foundation intervenes to save these pets, we often face overwhlelming veterinary bills. These pets also require extra time to find homes willing to take in these pets that will need special aftercare by their adopting famiies. However, the rewards of saving the lives of these innocent souls has always dwarfed the extra attention and sacrifice they required. |

The pets rescued by Zelda Foundation present financial and resource challenges to our small organization. Donations can be made specifically to the Zelda Foundation and directed for the care of a specific rescued pet. Please consider making a donation to Zelda Foundation below.
